Y'all. I'm calling this Chocolate Sweet Potato Pie in a Glass, and you're going to want to make this pronto. I've been playing around with this smoothie recipe for a while because I'm entering it in the Root and Revel Summer Blender Contest (go vote for it here and be entered to win a $275 Summer Blender Prize Package!) I'm pretty sure I've got a winner here. It is so creamy and delicious!
I had a couple of specific goals when I was creating it: I wanted it to be packed full of nutrition and healthy fats (so it would be satisfying for a long time), free of intimidating ingredients (so that you ALL will try it), and low in fruit (so no pesky blood sugar issues)...All this while being delicious and something that everyone will enjoy...not just all the "greenies" out there! :)
First, here's a breakdown of what's in it and why I chose each ingredient for the smoothie:
Coconut Milk: Coconut milk has a creamy texture and natural sweetness, and is among the world's healthiest foods. It provides nutrients and beneficial fat that's easily absorbed and used by the body for energy.
Sweet Potato: Sweet potatoes are packed with potassium, antioxidants, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin B6 to support energy, and they add creaminess and sweetness to the smoothie.
Avocado: Avocados are possibly one of the healthiest foods on the planet, jam-packed full of essential nutrients and healthy fats. They take on the flavor of what they're combined with, so they simply add even more creaminess to the smoothie.
Banana: Bananas are a great source of essential vitamins and minerals, like potassium, magnesium, and fiber. Of course, they add sweetness to the smoothie because of their sugar content, which is why I recommend consuming them with lots of healthy fat so that blood sugar levels are kept in check!
Hemp Hearts: These are seeds of the hemp plant and are an excellent source of nutrition, helpful for improving digestion, balancing hormones, and improving metabolism. They have a great 3:1 balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and add a perfect protein to the smoothie, containing not only all 20 amino acids, but also all nine of the essential amino acids that our bodies cannot produce.
Raw Cacao Powder: Organic, raw cacao contains a variety of unique phytonutrients, such as sulfur, magnesium and phenylethylamine. These provide many benefits, such as improved focus and alertness. And, it has more antioxidants than tea, wine, or blueberries!
Cinnamon: Not only does cinnamon add delicious flavor, it is one of the most beneficial spices there is. It has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immune-boosting properties.
Optional (but highly recommended) Additions:
Collagen Powder: Collagen is something that everybody should be adding into their diet for the improved gut and joint health and pure protein. Read more here about why I include this in all my smoothies.
Cordyceps: Cordyceps mushrooms have been shown to be a true "superfood" in the way they increase energy levels, fight the effects of aging and stress, and help keep the body free from disease. They provide a natural ability to fight free radicals, infections, and inflammation. I use a hot cacao/cordyceps mix that adds additional cacao, and a little sweetness from stevia. (See below in the recipe.)
And now, for the recipe...
Chocolate Sweet Potato Pie Smoothie
- 1 Cup Coconut Milk or more for desired thickness (or other milk of choice)
- 1/2 Cup Frozen Mashed Sweet Potato (I bake several sweet potatoes in advance, mash them, and throw them in ice cube trays to pop out and throw into smoothies.)
- 1/4 Avocado
- 1 Frozen Ripe Banana
- 3 TB Hemp Hearts
- 1 TB Raw Cacao Powder
- 1 tsp Cinnamon
- Handful of Ice Cubes
- 2 Scoops Collagen Powder (I use this one)
- 1 packet Hot Cacao/Cordyceps Mix (I use this one)
Combine all ingredients thoroughly in high-speed blender. It will be very thick and creamy, so use that blender tamper to get it all blended up.
This smoothie is so nourishing and delicious, and, unlike a lot of fruit and veggie smoothies, it will keep you satisfied for a long time because of all the healthy fats! I can't wait to hear what you think! And don't forget to go vote here and be entered to win an amazing prize package!
