Springtime seems to be when the ants come marching in, and sure enough, I spotted the first trail of them yesterday in the kitchen. Never fear...essential oils are extremely effective for getting rid of them, without any toxic chemicals. Plus, they make the house smell great, disinfect, and lift your mood at the same time!
There are a few oils that are very effective, with peppermint being at the top of the list. Melaleuca (tea tree), and citrus oils work well too, and there are a couple of ways use can use them. One way is to place some drops of oil on cotton balls and wipe them along baseboards and places where ants are entering (or wherever you have seen their trails). Then, leave the cotton balls in those areas. Repeat until the ants are gone.
Another method is to make an ant spray (which can also double as a countertop cleaner!) simply with water, vodka (or rubbing alcohol or witch hazel), and essential oils. The vodka can be omitted, but it helps the essential oils to disperse throughout the spray. If you're just using water, be sure to shake well before each use. Then add a total of about 40 drops of one, or a combination of, the above oils.
Here's a recipe that I like:
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup vodka
- 15 drops peppermint
- 15 drops wild orange
- 10 drops melaleuca (tea tree)
Combine all ingredients in a glass spray bottle and spray anywhere that you have seen ants, as well as along baseboards and places that may be entry points.
